Recommended Products and Services for Authors
There are dozens of products and services around – some of them aimed specifically at authors while others are general purpose, but used by a lot of indies.
This page lists some of our favourites. Some are affiliate links (we get a small commission, but you pay no extra), most are not – all are our recommendations.
Scrivener is the single most popular writing software for authors. In a recent poll, around a half of all authors said they use it for at least their first draft. Scrivener helps you organise your writing as you write it. Whereas with a standard word processor, you’re working on one large document, with Scrivener you create the structure and fill it in as you type. So, you might have one file per scene or per chapter (it’s up to you). This breaks the task down into manageable chunks, and it also means that moving sections around is childs-play.
Scrivener comes in two versions – one for Windows and one for Mac. The Mac version (2.x) is slightly more advanced than the Windows version, but the latter is still packed with features and well worth the investment.

Although MailChimp is the big monkey in the email marketing jungle, I believe MailerLite is the better choice for most authors.
Why? Firstly, it’s cheaper. For a mailing list of 5,000 subscribers, MailerLite will charge $20 compared to Mailchimp’s $50, with the difference getting greater as the size of your list increases.
MailerLite also has an excellent free account (for up to 1,000 subscribers) that has all the features of the paid account – including fully working automations. Mailchimp restricts the features of its free account, and you have to pay to get automations.
I also find MailerLite easier to use (and I’ve used Mailchimp for many years) – especially when it comes to automations.
